Indoor Review 2022 T2 – T1 2023

It’s time for a recap of the stellar 2022/23 indoor season that has just wrapped up. We saw over 100 people play indoor for HHC.

2022 Term 4 Competition

Starting off at the end of 2022, HHC had 4 junior teams and 4 senior teams playing the weekly comp run at Parkville, Dandenong and Vic Uni. Although results were mixed, what was clear is that everyone had a great time playing, learning and improving!

Final standings saw each team finish as follows: (photo for each team)

  • Womens Masters 3rd
  • Womens A 5th
  • Mens A 5th
  • Mens B 7th
  • U12 Pennant 8th
  • U14 Shield 4th
  • U14 Pennant 8th
  • U16 Pennant 8th

Indoor Training as Monash

With the first experience of indoor being games for a lot of juniors and seniors, HHC decided to run a couple of training sessions at Monash Sport. After all, practice makes perfect!

Run by the Indoor Hockey power couple, and Australian reps, Kate and Jonathon Stebbings (with help from superstar Sophie Thomson) we had a great turn-out of juniors and seniors keen to practice and learn more about indoor.

HHC is planning to run some more of these sessions in the lead up to next indoor season so keep your eyes peeled for the confirmed dates.

2023 Term 1 Competition

2023 started off with a bang for indoor. Term 1 saw 2 HHC teams enter the weekly women social comp at Parkville. These teams really showcased how great our women’s section is becoming, with teams including a mix of juniors, seniors and masters, all of varying skill levels from beginners to experienced players. The final standings saw each team finish as follows:

  • HHC1 2nd
  • HHC2 4th

Interclub championships (ICC) and Junior Interclub Championships (JIC)

In addition to the weekly women social comp, term 1 also included the Inter-club Championships (ICC) and Junior Inter-club Championships (JIC) run at Parkville and Monash. ICC involved teams playing up to 7 games across 3 days – lots of sore muscles but lots of fun, practice and goals! We saw teams end their respective ICC weekends in the following positions:

  • Mens Div 1 (A) 4th
  • Womens Div 1 (A) 4th
  • Womens Div 2 (B) 8th
  • U16 Boys
  • U18 Boys

JIC is run across 2 weekends and the final weekend is coming up, so look out for the recap in the next newsletter!

State and National Selections

The HHC community would like to congratulate Sophie Thomson (Open) and Isabella Bozzone (U21) for being selected for both the Victoria State Indoor team and the Australian National Indoor Squads. We wish both the best of luck training and playing and can’t wait to follow their journeys as Hawthorn’s indoor hockey legends.

Some parting words from me as the indoor coordinator – I’d like to thank everyone involved this indoor season. Not only does this include players, but also those who coached, managed, umpired, tech benched, drove, fed and supported our teams! These competitions wouldn’t be possible without the support from everyone in the HHC community and it’s this behind the scenes help that can only make our club and teams stronger. Enjoy the upcoming winter season and I look forward to harassing you all to play indoor later in the year.
